Gurgaon woman shoots at auto driver for not giving way, held

June 22, 2018

A 35-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly shooting at a 23-year-old auto rickshaw driver after a fight over incorrect parking in Bhawani Enclave, near Sector 9, on Wednesday morning.

According to the police, the woman, identified only by her first name Sapna, allegedly had an argument with auto rickshaw driver, Sunil Kataria, who had parked his auto rickshaw in a narrow lane of the area to answer a phone call.

The accused and the complainant live in the same neighbourhood, police said.

On Wednesday, the two fought when Sapna, who was on a scooter, told Sunil to move his vehicle so there is space for others to pass by.

Soon their argument snowballed, said a police investigator requesting anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

“The fight ended after neighbours intervened. Sapna left, but she returned with a country made pistol. She shot at Sunil, but he dodged the bullet, showed a medical examination conducted at the Civil Hospital,” the investigator said.

The police said that the pistol belonged to another man who lives in the same locality and works with Sapna. They both hail from a village in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.

A case has been registered against the woman under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 307 (attempt to murder) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 25, 54 and 59 of The Arms Act.

In a video shot by a bystander, Sapna can be seen trying to load the pistol again and yelling before the firearm is snatched from her.

The auto rickshaw driver said, “I was talking on the phone, when she asked me to move my auto rickshaw even though there was enough space for her to go. After the fight, I thought she had calmed down, but she returned and shot at me. I am lucky that the gun got stuck and she could not load it again.”

Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Sumit Kuhar said, “We have arrested the woman. Her accomplice, a man from Bulandshahr, whose gun was allegedly used in the crime, is at large and we are trying to trace him. We are verifying if there is a prior criminal case against the duo and how the man got the pistol.”
