People found to have filed a false dowry case will face up to five years in jail under a proposed new law placed before parliament on Monday
"The Dowry Prohibition Bill, 2018" tabled by State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki was sent for examination by the respective parliamentary standing committee, which must report back within 30 days.
As per the new provision of the proposed law cleared by the cabinet on May 7, the punishment for filing any false case will be a maximum of five years imprisonment, a maximum Tk50,000 fine, or both.

Another provision in the proposed revised law has been added only to specify the financial penalty for demanding or giving dowry, as this is not specified in the existing law.
The maximum punishments are the same as for filing a false case.
