A 30-year-old inmate of Luksar jail has written a letter to the district magistrate, chief minister and the Prime Minister seeking “permission to sell his kidney” to fight his legal battle. The prisoner, Raju alias Madan, was arrested in 2014 by Sector 39 police in connection with attempt to murder and rape cases. However, Raju claimed he was framed in the cases.
In the letter, Raju has said he has been in judicial custody since April 6, 2014. “I am poor and helpless and there is no legal help. I feel it is better to sell a kidney and fight the legal battle than to commit suicide,” he said. He said he has been facing mental and physical agony for the past several years. He is also suffering from ‘brain tumour’ and has unbearable pain. The undertrial said he was not getting adequate treatment in judicial custody.
“I urged the officials to help me sell one of my kidneys so that I take the legal battle ahead in the cases filed against me. I will be thankful to you for this help,” Raju said in the letter. Vipin Singh, superintendent, Luksar Jail, said he was not aware of the prisoner’s letter. “I will get it checked on Monday,” he said. Sources in the jail said Raju is accused in a case of attempt to murder and rape of a woman in 2014. Jitendra Nagar, an advocate in district and sessions court, Surajpur, said the court provides free legal aid to prisoners who can’t afford private legal aid. “If he is not getting free aid, I will take his case and purse the matter in the court,” he said.
